Open Question: Why does my 1997 BMW 318I turn off when i am driving?

For some reason the car just shuts off and i get two lights on and they show the battery symbol and the oil change symbol. As i am driving the car just shuts off and slows down and i cant press the gas petal because the car is off. I have to wait like a mintue or a few seconds before i can start the car up again.
